Keisha Brent Final Essay Is the Internet Really Bad What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains is a well written piece of writing by Nicholas Carr . Carr did a great job at exemplifying the exploration of the Internet's intellec tual and cultu ral consequences throughout his book. In fact I believe the internet has had a huge impact on society from many different standpo ints and even though Carr sort of touched based on most , there were a few I didn't quite agree with. I get the point he was try ing to make as far as technology advancin g and taking a toll on most I just don' t think it's a bad idea like he portrayed it as. I will further explain my reasoning to why I agree or disagree with each factor Carr could have elaborated differently s tarting with before the internet , the upcoming of the internet , the good/the bad, and the reality of how the internet influence others today. Before The Internet In the beginning Carr stated, "t he intellectual ethic of a technology is rarely recognized by its inventors. " (45) That statement is true, m ost of the modern day technology is remixed from past creations. We have come a long way in worldwide technological advancement. Computers are a way of living now but years ago everything was documented on paper and before then on stone. Being that I'm a private duty caregiver I am around a lot older people who got a chance to experience life before the internet. One of my clients Mr. Laudel is a 90yr old retired electrical engineer and I had the opportunity to talk to him about how the internet and new technology impacted his life. Mr. Laudel told me how he grew up on a farm and everything they ate and did for fun literally was outside. There were no phones, televisions, game systems, or computer just a marine chronometer they used to tell time. He then went on to say when he was an electrical enginee r things in that field were way more simple and less complex as the tools they use today. Towards the end of Mr. Laudel engineering career he admitted he did just enough to get by because of the new technology being brought into his company was becoming so advanced he wasn't able to understand how some of the tools worked and his position didn't really hav e to go too in depth with them. Although, Mr. Laudel said he did learn some of the basics of the new technology outside of work but his daughter was more into the internet and that even his grandchildren and great grandchildren use technology and internet way more than he could ever imagine. He also fe el like he lived an interesting yet eventfu l life without the internet but he always knew technology would one day evolve. "Quite a few people still listen to vinyl, use film cameras to take photographs, and look up phone numbers in the printed Yellow Pages." (89) That implication made by Carr is also true I was shocked to see one of my clients us ing a phone book to order pizza. When I asked her why she didn't just google the location she laughed and said , "That's for lazy people." Soon when she said that I thought about Carr chapter on google, The Church of Google and how he used this whole chapter to talk about how google is used and how it impacted the internet. " Without its search engine, and the other engines that have been built on its model, the Internet would have long ago become a Tower of Digital Babel. " (156) Which holds some type of veracity because most internet usage result in using some type of search engine, mainly google. The Upcoming of the Internet Indeed, the internet hosts an enormous informational base. Technology has made it possible for this information to reach far and wide. It would be almost unheard for the average American to go one day without the internet. Technology today is so advanced compared to when I was coming up. Just think

Clichà © vs. Idiom Clichà © vs. Idiom Clichà © vs. Idiom By Maeve Maddox In response to a recent post on idioms, a reader asked for a discussion of ââ¬Å"the distinction between idioms and clichà ©s.â⬠In the article referenced, I gave four definitions of the word idiom. Here is the definition closest to the word clichà ©: idiom: a construction or usage peculiar to English. A clichà © is an idiom that people notice and find annoying. Here are three typical definitions of clichà ©: A phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. (Oxford Dictionaries online) A trite or stereotyped phrase or expression; also, the idea expressed by it. (Merriam-Webster Unabridged) An expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has become overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even to the point of being trite or irritating, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel. (Wikipedia) The irritation factor of a clichà © depends to a large extent upon the listener or reader. Three clichà ©s that make me gag are ââ¬Å"the elephant in the room,â⬠ââ¬Å"a win-win situation,â⬠and ââ¬Å"dà ©ja-vu all over again.â⬠On the other hand, I donââ¬â¢t mind ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t please everyone,â⬠ââ¬Å"This too shall pass,â⬠or ââ¬Å"Mi Casa es Su Casa.â⬠Everyone uses clichà ©s. They are convenient verbal shorthand. If our goal is to be original, then clichà ©s are to be avoided. If we are just making conversation, trying to avoid confrontation, wanting to express a strong feeling, or trying to write a catchy headline, clichà ©s are our friends. Numerous websites offer lists of clichà ©s. The lists include proverbs, literary quotations, and cultural references as well as convenient phrases that say a lot in a few words. Here are a few clichà ©s that are alive and well in the media: alive and well ââ¬Å"still existing or active; often used to deny rumors or beliefs that something has disappeared or declinedâ⬠Ex. Email marketing is alive and well, at least for now- Headline, Fortune. to do an about-face ââ¬Å"to reverse ones opinion or course of actionâ⬠Ex. China Does an About-Face on GMOS- Headline, Bloomberg. a thorn in oneââ¬â¢s side ââ¬Å"a person or thing that repeatedly annoys you or causes you painâ⬠Ex. Otherwise, [Trevor] seems pretty content. That is, except for one thorn in his side- his hotheaded employee, Kat (Cobie Smulders).- Movie review, Washington Post. tell it like it is ââ¬Å"describe the facts of a situation no matter how unpleasant they may beâ⬠Ex. Biometrics For most people when first hearing the word biometrics, they have an instant reaction to tune out. Just because the term sounds complicated and somewhat boring does not mean that the information behind the term is incredibly interesting and fun! When first discussing the term with others, I too thought it would be a typical boring computer topic. It was not until I began to research the topic, that I saw computers to be intriguing. One of my favorite aspects of the topic is what it initially reminds me of. I could not help but think of spy and other technical movies that show biometrics being used. The term biometrics, refers to the automated methods of categorizing a person, based on their behavioral, and physiological characteristics. What people may not know about biometric systems, is that the basis alone is from natures oldest way of identification. By determining these characteristics in an authentication inquiry, this information can then be saved in reference, for identification to determine if the user can be granted access to any private or secured location. This particular method of recognition is preferred to those such as, passwords, or pin numbers. Although these methods are still commonly used, with biometrics we are able to make sure the person being identified is physically present, and elements the hassle of remembering several passwords. These physiological techniques could include fingerprints, retinal scanning, voice patterning, facial recognitions, DNA analysis along with hand and finger geometry. Biometrics is such a rapidly improving technology, that has been previously used for years in forensics, such as identification, and prison security. While the behavioral techniques include handwriting and voice recognition, gait, and keystroke dynamics. By having these special techniques replacing pins, we are able to feel secure about unauthorized used of ATMââ¬â¢s cellular phones, desktop PCââ¬â¢s, and other personal securities. Perceptions of belonging or not belonging can be influenced by the connections to places through memories, culture, beliefs and many other aspects. Personal connections to places are the links that are the strongest, as they have a first hand account of belonging or not belonging. Jane Harrison ââ¬ËRainbows Endââ¬â¢ play set in the 1950ââ¬â¢s, shows belonging or not belonging to places, predominantly through connections with culture. Also, belonging and not belonging to places is evident in the film ââ¬ËThe Blind Sideââ¬â¢ directed by John Lee Hancock, released in 2009. The links to a place is enforced by the characters passion to a sport. ââ¬ËLooking for Alibrandiâ⬠the novel, published in 1992 written by Melina Marchetta, demonstrates through culture and background connections to places and how the characters belong or not belong. The individuals in these texts are enriched and challenged by society and others. In Jane Harrisonââ¬â¢s play, ââ¬ËRainbows Endââ¬â¢ the play is centred around the aboriginals being assimilated into the white society and the hardships and struggles that came along with that transition. But, characters seem to still be isolated and rejected from the white society because of their aboriginal culture. Harrison shows the depth of their belonging to a place through feelings and physical disorientation when away from where they feel home is; this is evident after the flood when they are taken away from their safe place. In Act one Nan Dear wasnââ¬â¢t content but she had accepted that she was forced to live in a humpy on the riverbank, she would always refer to how happy she was at the Murray Darling, or what her culture calls Cummeragunja. The repetition of Nan Dear saying this symbolises her strong connection to a place. After the flood Nan Dear and her family are forced to move again because their house was destroyed. In Act two, scene seven, Nan Dear becomes sick from being away from her home, the place she feels she belongs. The strength of Nan Dears physical and mental connection to her home is so strong that being distanced from it has made her ill. Dolly leaves Nan Dear with Errol and she says ââ¬Å"No way Iââ¬â¢m going to fall off my perch in his company. â⬠By Nan Dear saying this, it highlights the cultural differences and beliefs of that time. Nan feels as though she cannot be in a ââ¬Ëwhiteââ¬â¢ persons presence to pass. Errol offers to drive Nan Dear to Mooroopna or the Murray so she would feel comfortable and not displaced where she is. Errolââ¬â¢s offer shows that through the younger generations, the mind set of segregation and downgrading of aboriginals is changing in the eyes of the ââ¬Ëwhiteââ¬â¢ youth. This scene shows how people can have a physical, spiritual, emotional and mental connection with a place. Through these aspects, they help the responder to get a connection with the meaning of the scene and sense of change. Similarly, in the book, ââ¬ËLooking for Alibrandiâ⬠by Melina Marchetta, Josephineââ¬â¢s Nonna Katia is emotionally connected to a place in Queensland from when she first moved to Australia from Italy. Her husband was absent for extended periods and she was left alone in a foreign country, unable to speak the English language. This language barrier proved to be a challenge and struggle for not only Nonna Katia but for most immigrants from that era. Katia became friends with a man, who we learn is Christina Alibrandi biological father. This link strengthens the connection she has to her place in Queensland as it reminds her of love. Katia began to felt accepted and safe in her new place, she felt like she belonged to her home and her place. Language became less of an issue and Katia grew into a liberated, independent young woman. Although her home was dirty she felt like it was hers. She says, ââ¬Å"It was old and the floor was dirt, but it was mine. â⬠This quote gives a sense of ownership and pride in what she belongs to. It also shows the simplicity of the time and how so little meant so much in comparison to modern day values. In ââ¬ËThe blind Sideââ¬â¢ directed by John Lee Hancock, the lead character Michael experiences belonging to a family when Leanne Tuhey takes Michael in off the street and treats him with respect and love, like no one else had ever done for him. Hancock shows Michaels differing emotions of belonging and not belonging through image flashbacks and colour changes. Hancock uses black and white images to represent his past where he did not belong and how it was a darker time for him. He then contrasts this by using colour to represent the present and how he belongs and is happy. The colour symbolises hope, happiness and perseverance through the hard times. His passion to achieve greatness leads him into a lighter future. Michael had always felt isolated from the ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠society like Nan Dear, Dolly and Gladys because of their race and background. Leanne, like Errol, saw beyond the stereotype of their race and looked at the individual and what they had to offer. Leanne is from a wealthy family and provides Michael with a room of his own. He says: Michael: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve never had one beforeâ⬠Leanne: ââ¬Å"your own room? â⬠Michael: ââ¬Å"a bedâ⬠This scene showed the viewers and Leanne how different Michael and his society lives compared to them. Michael finally felt apart of something; like he had a family and he belonged to them. Education connects people to a place through emotional memories; it also plays a role in all three texts. In ââ¬ËRainbows End,ââ¬â¢ Nan Dear buys Dolly encyclopaedias because she wants Dolly to be educated so she can have a good career and future. Education is important to the Tuhey family also; Michael is told that he has to bring his grades up so he can be eligible to play football. Football is used as an incentive to achieve, for the Tuhey family sport is a privilege not a right, it has to be earned. He is provided with a tutor to help with his schooling. Football is Michaelââ¬â¢s and the Tuheyââ¬â¢s passion as a family and its what Michael really feels he belongs to and can excel at. Josephine Alibrandi also values education in her life as her mother and father are educated and she is on an academic scholarship at her school. School can be a factor that influences individualââ¬â¢s perception of belonging or not belonging. Belonging or not belonging in a school environment starts from day 1 of schooling through social cliques and hierarchies, an individuals sense of belonging or not belonging can be linked to the place they were educated. Experiences, past memories and culture can hinder or assist an individual to belong in society and to groups, including school. Michael feels displaced and unsure of where he belongs when he goes back to his family home in the ââ¬Ëhood. ââ¬â¢ His mother had been evicted and he feels a sense of loss and abandonment. Michael has an internal conflict of love and sadness, he chases the love of a mother but is saddened by her lacking involvement and presence in his life. He is seen sitting at his former front door sobbing and alone. A similar scene is created in Rainbows End, Dolly is by the river, unsure and confused about where she belongs and who she is, and she is also sobbing. Both of these scenes show an emotional connection to a place and how their perception of belonging is altered and influenced by memories, feelings and connections to place. Perceptions of belonging or not belonging are evident in all three texts. A range of influences such as memories, culture, society and other individuals can change or mutate an individualââ¬â¢s perception of belonging or not belonging. A change of feelings towards belonging or not belonging is evident in all three texts as characters grow and change over the duration of the texts. Belonging or not belonging may not be clear to start with but, through different influences the characters are shaped into what they belonged or not belonged to. Their own experiences gave them knowledge or barriers towards situations resulting in them belonging or not belonging.

Then you have the shoplifting teens, these customers are there just to cause trouble, then you have the dads that donââ¬â¢t normally do the shopping, but have been asked to go get something. They are the ones lost, wondering around the store searching helplessly to find that one item that he has been asked to bring home. Next you have the drug users, the stoners. These customers are there because of the vast variety of muchies available to them at all hours of the night. There is also the bored elderly couples that are just there to walk around the store just to get them out of the house, the middle aged divorce that could only be there to either sulk or look for the next husband. Then of course, you have to have the town gossiper there to see what he/she can find to spread around town, because we all know this is where everyone goes!
