We know before the poem of some of the tragedy, and this is where readers want to be. We like to know more than the story does. A good poet feeds this military force trip of the readers, lulls them into this smug feeling. Theres so much here: in appeal, the expression of all of us in the instant of calamity. We ask some invisible judge to take it.

The life from spilling is the first place in the poem I see a hidden metaphor, which I like because we possess to ask, Is Frost referring to the blood, or the essence Life? Maybe not that clever, but it introduces the possibility of death without actually saying He could die. Frost paints a scene so well and so swiftly, as seen: the boy saw all, once again metaphorically, since there was nothing to see especially around him. He saw all spoiled. Frost does well to keep this short, but to me it is the capstone of the poem, secreted away in four words. I would have insisted on adding, His future ruined, never whole, a broken instrument... and so on, to make sure the reader got my point. This is really bad, people! The all is...
