In the article A manipulational approach to social purpose: differences between public-issue and personal-issue arguments by Amy Janan Johnsons (2009), the author enquiryed the difference between public-issue and personal-issue arguments. Johnsons research question was For which type of argument do individuals report the function expressing ones view more often?
Method
Her research method was to have one hundred seventeen undergraduate students complete a survey for research credit. Individuals were recruited from research date pool in the authors university department. Individuals who participated were to think of an argument about one of the topics provided, that they had recently experienced with a friend, romantic partner, or family member. Once this was immaculate, participants described the argument and then completed the functions of the interpersonal argument survey. They were then given a arcminute list of topics and repeated the process. They randomly received either the public-issue or personal-issue argument topic first.
Some of the topics for public-issue include: Death penalty, abortion, environment, stimulate discrimination, religion, gun control to name a few.
Public-issue argument concerns are focused outside an interpersonal relationship; they do not have direct behavioral implications as personal-issue arguments. Personal-issue argument topics included: conflicts over romantic partner, leisure time, other friends, roommate problems, bills/bills as an example. Personal-issue arguments as you can guess focus on issues related more closely to the behavior in the interpersonal relationship. Which the issues may be directly related to each persons behavior in the relationship.
Results
