Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington (1899-1974)
Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington is an African American and he wasnt any ordinary soldiery you just might be thinking where did the name Duke come in from and who gave it to him. He started piano lessons at the jump on of 7 and was taught private lessons in harmony (G.schirmer). He was a composer who played the piano who wrote over 3000 compositions and ragtime pianists was one of Ellingtons earliest influences (Ellington). The music he played wasnt scarce jazz it stretched into genres such as the blues, gospel, film scores, popular and classical. Ellington was the loss leader of a big band; he referred to his music as American Music instead of jazz (Ellington). Ellington got the nickname Duke by a friend from his childhood (G.schirmer). He gave him that nickname because he was so casual, easy grace, and a young noble gentlemans gentleman (G.schirmer). He dropped out of school three months before graduation and off-key down an art scholarship to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn 1916 because his extension grew to be so strong. When he was 17 Ellington made his schoolmaster debut, later he was encouraged to move to New York by Fats Waller in 1923, he would be the first to focus on musical form and using ternary form (Ellington).
