Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy: A Match not Quite Made in Heaven

Throughout Jane Austens gazump and Prejudice, the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, meets a variety of men, all with different attitudes towards women. Of these men, it is Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy who seems to take in her attention (be it negative or positive) through the entire novel. The family between Elizabeth and Darcy seems to be as dynamic as they are, and embodies Austens idea that a first impression and the ideals of society, are not easily changed, and that once they are formed, it is not common for an man-to-man to look past that first impression enough to sheer the societal norm to see what really lies beneath.
Elizabeth first encounters Darcy in chapter 3 of Pride and Prejudice. However, Elizabeth and Darcy do not speak to unmatchable another. Her first impression of him is gained by overhearing he and Mr. Bingley speaking, and as Mr. Bingley invites him to trip the light fantastic toe with Elizabeth, Darcy refuses, stating that Elizabeth is not handsome enough to tempt him. This claim is understandably upsetting to Elizabeth, and begins the formation of her view of Mr. Darcy.



By turning big money the glumer to dance with Elizabeth, who is of considerably lower social status, Darcy comes off as haughty and proud. Austen also juxtaposes this refusal next to Mr. Bingley choosing to dance 2 dances with Jane Bennet, freehand Bingley a more amiable appearance and giving Darcy a more arrogant air. (2) While this scene does not give Elizabeth a chance to display her character to Darcy, it is that member which makes the flaws of the societal roles and universal awareness of class at the clock more apparent, and serves as a social commentary on how women were viewed as objects of value rather than a males equivalent.
