The term Earth system science evolved about a decade ago. Scientists working at the United States Geologic keep abreast (USGS) and NASA coined the phrase to describe the nature of what they were studying: the relationships among the Earths subsystems and the events that occurred in spite of appearance them. The hydrosphere extends from Earths surface downward several kilometers into the lithosphere and upward about 12 kilometers into the atmosphere. Without the hydrosphere we would have no water.

A small portion of the water in the hydrosphere is fresh (non-salty). This water flows as precipitation from the atmosphere down to Earths surface,
