MEETING BETWEEN GRIFFITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE (GELI) AND REPRESENTATIVES FOR Saudi-Arabian ARABIAN STUDENTS AT GELI Thursday 22 January 2009 at 11.00am declare oneself of the meeting: An opportunity for GELI management and Saudi Arabian students to dispute and address concerns that a number of Saudi Arabian students express to the Saudi Club of Queensland. A document entitled students difficulties was submitted to GELI staff on the morning of 22 January 2009 which outline their main concerns. Spokesperson on behalf of Saudi Arabian students, Mr Khalid Al-Shahrani from the Saudi Club Queensland, advised he was a current PhD student at the University of Queensland. Approximately 15 GELI students were present at this meeting. Griffith slope Language Institute (GELI) staff in attendance were: Esther Waters, legate Director (DD) Anne Mackenzie, Director of Studies ( res publica), Brisbane Judy Collyer, Admissions Manager (AM), Mt Gravatt Mohannad Bawaz, Marketing Officer, marrow East Region Matters for discussion from the Students Difficulties document: 1. Often cases come up where students stay in levels for long periods of time. There swallow been cases where students have remained at the same level for 30 to 40 weeks.



The foundation should be looking at solutions that allow the student to be redirected into other programs that help him or her address their problems.

GELI Response: The DOS gave an overview of the levels and showed a sample of the pathway flowchart that is shown to all unsanded students during the placement testing/orientation sessions. The DOS advised that it was ordinary for students to stay in the same level for 10 to 15 weeks to complete the program at that level. She advised that student proficiency is assessed on an individual basis. The students present advised they were unaware that apiece five week block is only a partitioning of the whole program for that level.
